What life experiences led you to your role at VCH?
I was raised to have a sense of obligation to fight for equality and care for my community. Working for social justice has been a core piece of my life since high school, which eventually led to earning my masters degree in social work, and working for nonprofits ever since.

What is your favorite thing about working at VCH?
VCH is the most mission driven organization I’ve worked for, and I love that it is truly a community-based organization. Also the people (staff, board, tenants) are the best of the best!

What is your favorite thing to do on the Westside?
I recently discovered the Venice Electric LIght Parade, and it is the most “Venice” thing I’ve ever done! Highly recommend.

What life experiences led you to your role at VCH?
When I got out of college, I didn’t know what I wanted to do.  I got a job as a commercial property insurance broker, but realized quickly it was not fulfilling. I read a book called Do What You Love, The Money Will Follow, which led me down a path to finding affordable housing development as a career and I never looked back.

What is your favorite thing about working at VCH?
Its commitment to tenant rights and racial equity as the grounding to all of our work.

What is your favorite thing to do on the Westside?
Work! LOL. I love a walk on the beach or happy hour near the beach.

What life experiences led you to your role at VCH?
There are many, but three big ones are: the things that my parents taught me from a very young age about social justice and caring for each other; living in Venice in the 90s leading to a lasting love of the neighborhood; and my 20 years of working in Skid Row teaching me so much, especially the lifelong commitment required of all of us to demand and advance housing and racial justice and other human rights in Los Angeles.

What is your favorite thing about working at VCH?
The people! All of our tenants, program participants, staff, board members, supporters and donors, members of our home neighborhoods, and others that make up our collective VCH community.

What is your favorite thing to do on the Westside?
My answer to this forever will be skating in Venice.

What life experiences led you to your role at VCH?
After earning a Master’s of Science degree, I began my career working as an English instructor at Kansas State University and then at Los Angeles Community College District. While teaching I was given many opportunities to work with student services programs. In those roles it became crystal clear to me that students who struggled in the classroom, were facing major struggles outside of the classroom. That awareness ignited a sense of responsibility to put myself in spaces where I could work to address some of those societal challenges. My need to serve lead me to VCH. When I began here, VCH had a tag line: “Housing for People Not for Profit.” That tag line still resonates with me today. I am 100% dedicated to doing work that strengthens people.

What is your favorite thing about working at VCH?
My favorite thing about working at VCH is that I have always gotten do work that encourages and celebrates people.

What life experiences led you to your role at VCH?
I am fortunate to have never had to worry about my basic needs being met and know there are so many people who cannot say the same. I’m at VCH because I want to do everything I can do to change that, and housing and supportive services are what work.

What is your favorite thing about working at VCH?
My favorite thing about VCH is the community- the people we serve, my VCH family, our supporters, always can brighten my day. I love when I’m walking around Venice and run into VCH stakeholders out and about.

What life experiences led you to your role at VCH?
I grew up with an outsized love of campaigns that led me to fundraise for them after studying Critical Theory and Social Justice at Occidental College—you can say I knew I wanted to do this work for a long time!  Having grown up in Los Angeles, I am no stranger to what this city can be at its best, but I also what it’s becoming due to pricing out our long time and most vulnerable residents.  I came here to change that.

What is your favorite thing about working at VCH?
The people! Everyone here has their eyes on the prize, and is unwavering in their support of our mission and expressing of our values.  The free snack area is pretty cool too.
